Tennis star withdraws from event after shower ‘explodes’ and she needs stitches

Brazilian tennis star Beatriz “Bia” Haddad Maia has been forced to withdraw from the Guadalajara Open Akron after an accident in her hotel bathroom. The world no. 18 was admitted to hospital and required stitches after cutting her hands when a shower box exploded.

Haddad Maia was due to feature at the WTA 1000-level women’s tennis tournament in her round of 64 clash against America’s Danielle Collins tomorrow. However, the 27-year-old has since ruled herself out due to injury on the eve of their tie and will be replaced by Florida-born World No. 168 Sachia Vickery.

Fresh from her quarterfinal defeat to Barbora Krejčíková at the San Diego Open, the Brazilian revealed that she had cut her hands after the shower box in her hotel room broke. She went into detail in a post on social media and revealed the extent of her injuries to her 371,000 followers.

“Hey guys I hope all are doing well,” she posted on Instagram. “Unfortunately this is a more “boring” post, but it is also part of it.

“Last night, Sunday, at the hotel, getting out of the shower and opening the shower box the door just popped and I ended up cutting some parts of my body off. I had to go to the hospital here in Guadalajara to get stitches (between them in both hands) and unfortunately I will not be able to play here in Mexico (special place for us tennis players due to all the responsiveness of the people and efforts of the tournaments).”

Despite the extent of her injuries, Haddad Maia is hopeful of returning to the courts later in the year. “Besides the scare I’m fine It could be something much more serious,” she added.

“I will need a few days now to heal the wounds and be able to be back for the latter part of the year; and keep fighting for my goals for 2023. I appreciate the affection and good vibes from everyone. Have a nice week and see you soon.”

Before the injury Haddad Maia had enjoyed a standout year on the courts where she reached a career-high ranking of No. 12 in Abu Dhabi in February. The Brazilian managed to reach the semifinals of the WTA 500 tournament but saw her journey end with a defeat to Belinda Bencic in straight sets.

This year also saw her win a maiden WTA 1000 doubles title at the 2023 Madrid Open back in May. Paired with Victoria Azarenka the duo managed to defeat top seeds Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff in straight sets in the final.

Haddad Maia will be hoping to be back in action for the China Open which starts on Sept. 29.
