Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is reportedly being lined up for a shock return to Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old made the switch to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, after a decade of success at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid are facing an injury crisis in defence after David Alaba underwent surgery after rupturing his ACL in his left knee during their 4-1 victory over Villarreal on Sunday.

Eder Militao is also out of action after tearing his ACL back in August, leaving Antonio Rudiger and Nacho as the only remaining fit central defenders.

German publication BILD have now reported that Madrid could look to their former defender Varane, to solve their injury crisis.

Varane won 18 trophies at Real Madrid but has struggled recently at Manchester United

During his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, Varane won 18 trophies – including four Champions Leagues – before joining United in a £34m deal. 

The 2018 World Cup winner has found himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season, leading to speculation over his future.

Erik ten Hag has preferred the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and veteran Jonny Evans at times during the campaign.  

After not being used in United’s four prior Premier League clashes, the Frenchman returned to the starting line-up during the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich and the following goalless draw with Liverpool. 

But he has been limited to just 430 minutes of action in United’s opening 17 games this season. 

In the meantime, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been looking to the likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni to fill in at the back at times this season.

It’s not just in defence where Real Madrid have struggled with injuries. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Vinicius has missed their last four LaLiga outings with a torn thigh muscle.

It was previously reported that Manchester United won’t be busy in the January transfer window, as they will focus on outgoings after spending £185m during the summer window. 

The likes of Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek are expected to leave the club.
