Martin Brundle tries to chat to Shaquille O’Neal – but NBA icon says three words

Sky Sports presenter and F1 hero Martin Brundle could only squeeze three words from NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal during the grid walk ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Brundle’s grid walks rarely disappoint and the former team-mate of Michael Schumacher was forced to try and drain blood from a stone after bumping into another big hitter unwilling to get involved with the pre-race procedures.

The ever-determined Brundle approached the Red Bull team where O’Neal was chatting and posing for pictures with mechanics. But he was snubbed by the former Los Angeles Lakers star who instead went to take a picture with the Team Principal Christian Horner.

Brundle poked fun at Horner, quipping he was standing on his tiptoes as O’Neal dwarfed the majority of the starting grid as team members posed alongside the 7ft1 four-time NBA champion.

Eager to hang around to talk to O’Neal, Brundle had to stall for time before O’Neal turned to speak on the grid walk, but he was seemingly in a rush. As Brundle asked how he was doing, the NBA legend simply replied “Lewis Hamilton baby”, despite him walking out of the Red Bull section – although no one was going to argue with him.

Brundle sarcastically replied: “Well, ok, that’s all you need to say”, as O’Neal was ushered away from the cameras and presumably headed towards the hospitality section beside the track.

O’Neal wouldn’t have been disappointed with Red Bull’s performance after world champion Max Verstappen overcame a five second time penalty to win the Grand Prix. Although Sergio Perez missed out on a second place finish as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc overtook the Mexican on the final lap to finish second and scupper a first 1-2 finish for Red Bull since Monza in September.
