Twickenham streaker didn’t plan topless stunt that had phone ringing ‘for years’

'The Twickenham Streaker' admitted her phone didn't stop ringing for "three years" after a topless stunt at a Rugby union match.

Erika Roe, who is now 57 years old, became a household name among streakers back in 1982 after she ran onto the pitch at Twickenham Stadium topless during a match between England and Australia.

Before she was thrusted into the spotlight, Roe said she "never dreamed of becoming famous" and her stunt came about randomly.

"I never dreamed of becoming famous. I was just an ordinary woman enjoying my life working in a wine bar and a lovely bookshop," she said.

The Suffolk-born Roe was just 24 years old when she became the most famous streaker in Britain as she admitted her life had completely changed after the event.

"On January 2, 1982, friends invited me to the rugby international in front of 60,000 fans. At half-time, the crowd appeared bored by a man dressed as a gorilla trying to entertain them, then someone shouted, ‘Doesn’t someone streak now?’

"For me, it was like a red rag to a bull. Totally unplanned, I removed my top and bra and streaked across the ground with a cigarette in my mouth before being chased by a policeman and hauled off to the police station.

"What happened next gave my life a 360° turn and I couldn’t stop the ball rolling. I was only 24 and I can’t explain why I streaked."

The aftermath of her stunt was something Roe couldn't imagine as offers came flooding in from the likes of hotels and pubs.

England's rugby team will be aiming for glory in France, with Umbro supplying their kits for the tournament. It is the first time that the supplier have been handed the chance to produce the kits, with a traditional white home shirt emblazoned with the iconic red rose.

"The phone rang for three years non-stop with offers such as hotel, pub and shop openings, new businesses and rugby club dinner invitations.

“I appeared on breakfast TV with David Frost, lots of TV shows alongside stars such as Kenneth Williams and the policemen who escorted me off the rugby ground."

Six years after her history-making moment, Roe headed for Portugal with her husband as they settled for farm life but revealed her divorce led her to becoming more independent.

“My marriage breakdown proved a turning point for me because I raised my children by myself, paid off the old mortgage and learned how to run a farm.

"I also restored an old house. I’ve built walls, tiled floors and installed a bathroom. It’s been 25 years of hard labour."
