England fans were left scratching their heads after spotting Harry Maguire marking his own team-mate for Ukraine's goal.

The Manchester United flop was seen holding onto the Crystal Palace man as Oleksandr Zinchenko slotted home an opening goal – with fans then flocking to social media.

One X (formerly Twitter) user said: "Marc Guehi is left centre back and so in the right position. But why did Maguire think he had to go hug him?"

A second added: "But have you seen Maguire hugging Guehi?" A third continued: "Why is Maguire marking Guehi!!!????"

A fourth joked: "People blame Maguire, but he's the only one marking. Doing a great job blocking Guehi!"

A fifth posted: "Look at Maguire, going to man mark his own player (Guehi)."

A sixth concluded: What on earth was Maguire doing?? He ran into and blocked Guehi from getting an interception or at least trying and pressuring."

The 30-year-old former Leicester man has impressed for England at major tournaments but his club form left fans concerned – as they were pleased to voice after Ukraine took the lead.

The Three Lions were level before the break thanks to Kyle Walker's first England goal on his 77th cap.

Matthew Upson said of the Ukraine goal on BBC Radio 5 live: "Wow. That is a superbly worked goal from Ukraine.

"It's a really good early cross and there is Zinchenko arriving right on cue to side foot into the bottom corner. It's a really good goal on the counter."

England went into the game with four wins from their opening four matches in the qualification process.

Wins have come against Ukraine in the home leg as well as North Macedonia, Italy and Malta. Ukraine had won two and lost one of their matches, beating both North Macedonia and Malta.
