Real Madrid and Barcelona ‘watch Greenwood’ as Man Utd man given huge move hope

Ten Hag insists Man Utd have plenty to play for after European exit

Mason Greenwood is settling into life in Spain as he continues his season-long loan at Getafe from Manchester United. And while speculation over Greenwood’s future beyond next summer ramps up, a permanent La Liga stay looks feasible as interest in his signature reportedly grows.

United are believed to have made their mind up on the 22-year-old’s future, and will look to generate a transfer fee before his contract expires in 2025.

Greenwood has been getting back up to speed overseas after 16 months away from the pitch, helping Getafe creep into the top half of the La Liga table.

He’s registered four goals and three assists in 13 appearances for the Madrid-based outlet and is said to have been monitored by several heavyweights during his return.

According to 90min, Greenwood is happy with life in Spain after moving with his family and is pleased with how his comeback has gone so far.

The report adds that Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the European giants to have watched him in action this season.

It’s claimed that Bundesliga sides Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have also been keeping tabs on Greenwood’s development.

Other reports have credited Lazio and Real Sociedad with an interest in the former United No 11, but Getafe are also in the frame.

Getafe president Angel Corres recently confirmed that the club were considering whether to attempt to make Greenwood’s stay permanent at the end of his loan.

“I believe a lot [in Greenwood]. From here, we continue to work periodically. We continue to meet with Manchester [United] to see if they are happy,” Corres told Cadena SER.

“The truth is that they are happy with the treatment, not only from the fans of Getafe but also from the whole of Spain. Now we have to keep on defending him.”

The Athletic report that Getafe didn’t pay a loan fee to sign Greenwood on transfer deadline day and inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause in his contract.

It means the La Liga outfit would receive a chunk of the transfer fee United receive for the academy graduate next year or pay just 80 per cent of the Red Devils’ asking price.

Greenwood may be content with life at Getafe, but he will undoubtedly be hungry to return to the level he reached during his meteoric rise at Old Trafford.

He could, therefore, hold out for a Champions League switch, and there appears to be early suitors from that elite pool.
