Man Utd trolled by giant ‘leaky defence, leaky roof’ billboard near Old Trafford

Manchester United have been trolled by a giant billboard outside Old Trafford – just when you thought their season couldn't get any more bonkers.

The giant advert, erected by Checkatrade, the website that connects tradespeople with customers, takes the mickey out of both United's poor form and the ruinous state of their stadium. It reads: "Leaky roof [tick]. Leaky defence [cross]. There are some things that even Checkatrade can't fix."

It not be as rage-inducing as the Carlos Tevez billboard Manchester City fans set up after the Argentinian was controversially lured to the blue half of of the city in 2009. But it nonetheless serves as a brutal reminder of the dire state of play at United, particularly as it's just a stone's throw away from Old Trafford.

Photos of the billboard have been doing the rounds on social media, leading one United fan to admit: "We are a joke." Another moaned: "We've hit rock bottom. Can't believe we've literally become a meme," while a third said: "They didn't have do us dirty like that."

Rival supporters, naturally, found it hilarious. One said: "Hahaha this has made my day." Another laughed: "That's some proper shade haha," while a third wrote: "A masterclass in advertising by Checkatrade [clap emoji]."

The Red Devils have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season, losing five of their first 12 games. They're also doing terribly in the Champions League, with three defeats in four games leaving them rock bottom of their group.

Poor form, injury crises, a seemingly never-ending takeover saga and off-field controversies have left a dreary mood around Old Trafford. Up next for Erik ten Hag's side is a trip to Everton, followed by away games against Galatasaray and Newcastle. Their next home game is against Chelsea on December 6. Here's hoping Checkatrade's billboard lasts until then.
