Lesnar wins WWE title as dream clash with Lashley set for Royal Rumble

We hope our readers enjoyed the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, and Mirror Sport is back with the first WWE column of 2022.

We couldn’t have asked for a more exciting start to the year, as the inaugural Day 1 event saw the crowning of a new WWE champion in the form of Brock Lesnar.

The Beast Incarnate won the prestigious championship belt for the sixth time in his illustrious career and won his first title since losing the belt to Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 36 in April 2020.

However, he now has his hands full with the ‘All Mighty’ Bobby Lashley, who set up a dream clash at the Royal Rumble.

Brock Lesnar reigns supreme at WWE Day 1

The WWE held the Day 1 pay-per-view event for the first time in their history, and it did not disappoint.

Big E was set to defend the WWE championship against Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and Bobby Lashley in a fatal-four-way match.

Brock was originally scheduled to face Roman Reigns for the Universal title, but it emerged an hour before the show that the Tribal Chief contracted covid-19 and would be unable to compete.

As a result, The Beast was inserted into the WWE title bout, making it a fatal-five-way and a blockbuster main event.

Lesnar set about laying waste to his opponents, executing numerous German suplexes with ease.

However, the one superstar in the match he was unable to dominate was Lashley, who delivered a hellacious spear to Lesnar through the barricade.

In the closing stages of the encounter, Lashley laid out Lesnar with another spear, this time in the ring and almost secured the win before the powerhouse kicked out at 2.

Lashley proceeded to put Lesnar in his ‘Hurt Lock’ submission move, but it was broken up by Big E, who was desperate to successfully defend his title.

He was on the verge of doing just that when he hit his “Big Ending’ finishing move on Lashley, putting him out of contention, but he ran into an unstoppable Lesnar, who hoisted him up before delivering an F5, and pinned him for the win.

What else happened at Day 1?

While the main event was an absolute cracker, the other matches on the card delivered their fair share of entertainment.

In the opening match, the effervescent New Day and belligerent Smackdown tag team champions The Usos renewed their historic rivalry with another pulsating match.

Jimmy and Jey prevented their opponents from winning their 12th tag title crown when the pair delivered their version of the Dudley Boyz ‘3D’ finisher to retain the straps.

Becky Lynch once again retained her Raw women’s title against Liv Morgan, and the ‘Big Time Becks’ Royal Rumble opponent will be decided when Morgan, Bianca Belair and Doudrop compete in a triple threat match next week on Raw.

Accompanied to the ring by music group Migos, RK-Bro retained the Raw tag team belts after defeating the Street Profits, with the rappers watching ringside.

Drew McIntyre got one over on Madcat Moss, but both he and buddy Happy Corbin didn’t take too kindly to the defeat and would later brutally assault the SmackDown warrior backstage, injuring his neck in the process.

One of the other premier matches on the card saw Edge face off against The Miz and after the latter's wife Maryse got involved, Edge’s significant other Beth Phoenix made a surprise appearance, which distracted Miz long enough for Edge to spear him and pick up the win.

Bobby Lashley sets up dream Brock Lesnar match…it’s finally happening!

Lashley was seething after he failed to win the WWE title at Day 1.

However, he would be given the opportunity to earn another shot at the belt, as he faced Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and Big E in a fatal-four-way, the original match for Day 1, with the winner going on to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble event on the 29th of this month.

The chaotic match saw the action reach as far as the concourse and merchandise stand as all four grapplers battled hard in a bid for another shot at glory.

Kevin Owens even delivered a scintillating swanton bomb from the crowd to his opponents on the floor below, but it would be in vain as Lashley would spear all three men before pinning Owens for the victory.

The result meant the match that wrestling fans across the world have been clamouring for, will finally take place.

After years of comparisons and speculation, for the first time ever Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley will compete for the WWE title, and we can’t wait!
