Cena has been performing on a part-time basis with Vince McMahon’s promotion since 2017 due to his advanced age of 42 and his busy Hollywood schedule.
The Champ insists that his heart still lies with the wrestling giants but his advanced age combined with the faster and more precise young talent mean that he is not needed anymore.
Cena told The Wrap: “It doesn’t mean that my heart doesn’t lie with WWE, I’ve often said that if I’m doing something like this then it’s impossible to do something like that.
“I’m older now, I just turned 42.
They don’t need me, I am grateful for everyone who says ‘we miss you,’ and there was a time when I could genuinely say from a financial standpoint that they needed me, that time is up
“I watch WWE on a regular basis and the talent is getting faster and more precise, and I’ve always been referred to as ‘unorthodox’ so I’m not exactly the most precise.
“They don’t need me, I am grateful for everyone who says ‘we miss you,’ and there was a time when I could genuinely say from a financial standpoint that they needed me, that time is up.”
Cena’s most recent match took place last January on RAW where he lost a No1 Contender’s Fatal 4-Way Match which also included Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and eventual winner Finn Balor.
The Leader of the Cenation then made a surprise appearance at WrestleMania 35 as his old gimmick of the Dr of Thuganomics and took out Elias.
The 16-time world champion is now concentrated on his acting career as it was recently confirmed that he will join the cast of Fast & Furious 9.
The former World Heavyweight Champion will link up with the likes of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster.
It was also rumoured that the ex-WWE Champion will soon be part of the DC Comics’ Suicide Squad sequel.
If that’s the case then he will co-star with Margot Robbie, Idris Elba and Viola Davies.
Cena is also hosting the rebooted Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? TV game show.
The show premiered last Monday on Nickelodeon.
