Michael Owen has been branded "an odd bloke" after telling a baffling story about throwing a dart into someone's leg.

The ex-England striker was asked to reveal a Christmas confession ahead of Tuesday night's Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony, and he took people by surprise with a completely random anecdote.

Did he wait until Christmas Eve to buy all his presents one year? Or maybe he once got drunk and passed out under the tree? Nope. He impaled a mate with an actual dart, from 20 metres away apparently. Worse still, he had the audacity to suggest it wasn't his fault.

"I remember throwing a dart in somebody's leg before, thinking they were just going to move out the way, just joking around," he said. "I was about 20 metres away and thought I'll just lob this towards said person.

"They just seemed to watch it and watch it and watch it, and it went plonk right in their leg. I was like, 'You're supposed to move!' I didn't do it too hard. I wasn't going to announce that to the world but as you've asked."

A clip of his bonkers story did the rounds on social media and fans thought it was hilarious and off-putting in equal measure. "Michael Owen is one of a kind," one X user said. A second wrote: "What an odd bloke he is," while a third joked: "If I was stuck on a desert island with Michael and a coconut. I would eat Owen and talk to the coconut."

A fourth posted: "Actually starting to like Michael Owen a bit because of his hilarious throwing anecdotes," while a fifth said: "Michael Owen is weird, but endearingly weird. Like a mad uncle."

Another person commented: "[Owen is] The gift that keeps on giving. He’s managed to turn a Christmas ‘confession’ into another story about being great at throwing things from distance," referring to the anecdote the Liverpool legend revealed on the Up Front With Simon Jordan podcast about throwing apples into a bin from distance to get approval from his dad when he was a child.

"The bin would be by the TV, six metres away or whatever. I would just do it. I had the bravery to miss and for there to be a stain on the wallpaper and my mum to absolutely scream at me and send me upstairs," Owen told Jordan. "I wasn’t cocky at all, but the next day I would do the same and I’ll be, bump, and it’ll go right in the middle and my Dad would give me a nod of approval. My mum would be seething, but couldn’t say anything, because it went in.

"That confidence, that sort of daring, that nod of approval that, ‘I don’t want to get b******ed by my mum here’, but I’m desperate for a little wink, a little nod from my dad, to say, 'here you cocky little, you know’. That’s what I always yearned as a kid."
