Joey Barton has launched another angry social media tirade after Mary Earps was crowned 2023 Sports Personality of the Year.

The former Premier League midfielder, who caused a major stir by criticising female football pundits earlier this month, congratulated the England Lionesses star when her win was announced, but later branded the result "f***ing nonsense".

Barton noted that Earps hadn't won anything in 2023, something Piers Morgan also pointed out, and mocked the fact that Nike didn't put her goalkeeper shirt up for sale before the Women's World Cup in the summer. "So the best sports person this year is… A Women Goalie," Barton wrote on X. "Lost in a couple of finals this year. Not won a sausage."

He added: "So popular that Nike didn’t even sell a replica jersey before tournament. You telling me all those who jumped on that bandwagon, haven’t voted in the BBC nonsense? Good luck to Mary. Hope she makes a few quid."

Later, he appeared to insult the Manchester United keeper's weight, writing: "To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…? Well, that’s just madness to me. Both almost genius like in their respective fields. They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds that plays in goal for a girls team.

"That’s the world we live in. This all started with the ‘Everyone’s a Winner’ sport’s days. This is what happens when you celebrate mediocre. You breed this weak culture. A culture of losers. A culture of snowflakes."

Morgan, who clashed with Barton when the ex-Manchester City ace appeared on his Uncensored show a couple of weeks ago, also challenged the result, posting: "No offence to Ms Earps, but shouldn’t it have been given to someone who actually won something in 2023?"

The furore surrounding Barton began at the start of the month when the 41-year-old suggested that most female pundits and commentators who cover men's football aren't in their jobs on merit. In a furious rant on X, he said men who enjoy listening to women commentating "need their heads testing" has spent the past few weeks doubling down on his views.

Speaking on Talk TV, the Liverpool-born former player insisted he wasn't sexist and that all he wanted was for punditry and commentary jobs to go to the most deserving person. Ex-Sky Sports News presenter Bianca Westwood, who was a guest on the show with Barton, was one of a number of high-profile female broadcasters to swipe back at him. She branded his comments "out of order", while Laura Woods accused him of encouraging pile-ons.
