Arsene Wenger has defended changes to the FIFA Club World Cup that will see 32 teams take part in the competition from 2025.

The former Arsenal boss added that the plans, which have received criticism from the likes of Pep Guardiola, will ultimately prove to be a positive for the clubs involved.

Speaking at an event held during the final iteration of the competition’s current format, Wenger insisted the changes will provide a significant benefit to teams competing from outside Europe.

‘The positive impact this will have on clubs is going to be huge, because it will increase resources for clubs all over the world to develop and to compete,’ he said.

‘In Europe we are lucky, but it’s important that we make football really global and this creates a chance for other clubs to progress. It will give more opportunities to more players all over the world to compete at the highest level.

FIFA’s chief of global football development also addressed concerns shared by the likes of Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp that the competition will only further congest an already crowded football calendar, insisting that player welfare remains a top priority in the decision-making process.

‘I accept that the football calendar is a busy one, but this is a competition that is going to take place every four years and of course the rest period during the competition and afterwards has to be respected.

‘The welfare of the players in the last 20 years has increased dramatically as well, when you look at injury prevention, recovery work, nutrition and advances in medical technology.

‘It is unrecognisable from what it used to be. Also VAR has helped with the protection of players, as players know they cannot escape from making bad tackles that cause injury.

The updated format was criticised by Pep Guardiola, with the Man City boss saying it will be ‘tough on players’
