Gary Neville criticised the Liverpool crowd as their side struggled to make a breakthrough against Manchester United.

The Reds made an electric start to the main event of the Premier League weekend at Anfield, placing their fierce rivals under intense pressure early on in scenes reminiscent of last season's 7-0 hammering.

But visitors United weathered the storm and managed to keep the scoreline level in the first half, taking the air out of an excitable home crowd which had been boosted by the new Anfield Road Stand upper tier.

Shortly before the break, Red Devils legend Neville – who was on co-commentary for Sky Sports – argued: "I have to say, this is by far the worst atmosphere I’ve ever seen at Anfield for a Manchester United game.

"This is Liverpool vs Manchester United. It’s really, really quiet so far, other than the first five minutes where they were up for it."

Andre Onana was important for United in the opening 45 minutes, saving well in particular to deny Virgil van Dijk's header from a corner. Liverpool struggled to create any clear cut chances, though.

United's approach after kick-off – to play out from the back starting with Onana – infuriated Neville, who tore into Erik ten Hag's gameplan.

"It might sound a little bit 1980s, 1990s but you don’t do that in any decade at Anfield, it’s ridiculous," he fumed. "Look at them, there’s six Liverpool players on the edge of the box waiting for them to play it. Go on then, what are they doing?!"

Neville echoed his comments about the atmosphere in the second half as the wait for a goal rumbled on, adding: "The crowd have been muted all after and now I think they're starting to get frustrated because they know it could be heading for a goalless draw."

That turned out to be the case, with neither side hitting the back of the net in a stalemate which was much better for United than Liverpool.
