Gary Neville has branded Cristian Romero as ‘absolutely mad’ before stating that the Tottenham defender should have been sent off for a reckless tackle on Callum Wilson during their 4-1 win against Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Romero wiped out the England striker catching him on the ankle in what was a dangerous tackle that earned him a yellow card in the second half.

But Neville believed he should have been given a greater sanction for the foul, which would have been his second red card of the season.

‘He’s mad him,’ Neville said to Sky Sports. ‘Honestly. Absolutely mad. Honestly, I think it’s a red card at first look.

‘He’s [referee] is thinking about it, he may give him a yellow but he’s crazy Romero. He always has to tackle. Jockying. And slowing himself down doesn’t come into his head.’

After taking a look at the replay, Neville said: ‘No that’s a red. Again I’ve got very little sympathy for him. He does it on the floor and he’s defenceless. He’s just gone straight over the ball onto his ankle.

‘He’s got away with it this time. But Spurs need to do something about it. You don’t want to take his aggression away as it’s the best part of his game. He has to control it a lot better than he does it happens so often.’

On it being his fourth red card of the calender year, Neville said: ‘It’s not a fluke.’
