McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has stated that he believes Lando Norris is “very harsh on himself” and that the young Brit needs to look at the positives from race weekends more often. The Woking-based team are assessing their options when it comes to better supporting the 24-year-old.

Norris claimed a career-best seven podium finishes this season with six of those coming on the second step, but the 24-year-old was often left berating small mistakes from the weekends rather than celebrating his success.

This was particularly prevalent during the final weekends of the season. Despite claiming the sprint race pole in Brazil, Norris spent his post-session interviews lamenting his qualifying laps from the day prior, insisting that he should have been on pole position for the Grand Prix as well.

Touching on this attitude, Stella told Motorsport.com: “Certainly, even the way he addresses his own performance I think deserves attention because he just seems very harsh on himself.

There’s quite a lot of positives and we need to make sure that we look into that, and we make the negatives in a way be functional to perform, not simply to punish yourself.”

Discussing the ways in which McLaren can help Norris with his overly critical personal assessments, Stella explained: “It’s about how you judge situations, it’s about how you talk about situations, about how you interpret yourself. This one certainly deserves some attention.

“How can we just sometimes accept that a 99.9 per cent lap is good enough? What are you up against? Always the 100 per cent or consistency? When you look into opportunities with drivers, with the athletes at this level, you do it as a group.

More F1…
