{"id":299164,"date":"2023-12-05T23:24:24","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T23:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/?p=299164"},"modified":"2023-12-05T23:24:24","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T23:24:24","slug":"oisin-murphy-relishing-prospect-of-riding-over-hurdles-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/horse-racing\/oisin-murphy-relishing-prospect-of-riding-over-hurdles-for-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Oisin Murphy relishing prospect of riding over hurdles for first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1> Three-time champion jockey Oisin Murphy relishing the prospect of riding over hurdles for the first time at Wincanton this week<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oisin Murphy will ride the Cian Collins-trained six-year-old Lets Do This\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The 28-year-old jockey has ridden six Group One winners this year\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>There is a tradition of leading Flat jockeys riding over hurdles\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three-time champion Flat jockey Oisin Murphy will fulfil a career ambition when he makes his debut riding over hurdles at Wincanton on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy, 28, an accomplished showjumper, will ride the Cian Collins-trained six-year-old Lets Do This in the Danny McNab Bookmakers \u201cNational Hunt\u201d Novices\u2019 Handicap Hurdle.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy has ridden six Group One winners this year including Mawj in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May.<\/p>\n<p>The Killarney-born jockey said: \u2018My uncle is Jim Culloty, who rode winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Best Mate), Grand National (Bindaree) and Irish Grand National (Timbera) and also trained a winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Lord Windermere).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I worked with him in my teens, so Jump racing has always been part of my life and it has always been a burning ambition of mine to ride in a Jump race.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/05\/18\/78610437-0-image-a-28_1701802518590.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Three-time champion Flat jockey Oisin Murphy is set to makes his debut riding over hurdles<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I took out a Jump licence earlier in the year as at one stage it looked like I might get a ride in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The programme of Flat racing means it is unlikely that I will be able to ride over hurdles often but this opportunity arose as I know the trainer and owner of Lets Do This well. It is only a fairly low-grade handicap hurdle on Thursday so it seemed like a good place to start. I have been schooling horses to prepare though have not yet ridden Lets Do This.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Murphy added: \u2018Jim might be coming along to see me ride and my friend Denis O\u2019Regan, who recently retired, might be travelling over from Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ll be walking the course when I get to Wincanton to see what it\u2019s like and will try and seek the advice of the Jump jockeys riding there. I am really looking forward to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>There is a tradition of leading Flat jockeys riding over hurdles.
