Pep Guardiola and Anthony Taylor are set to meet on the touchline again this week, with the referee being named as the fourth official for Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

It comes after the Spanish manager hit out at officials after Man City’s 3-3 draw against Tottenham on Sunday, with Guardiola unhappy with referee Simon Hooper’s controversial decision to blow the whistle for a foul on Erling Haaland just as Jack Grealish ran clean through on goal in the dying embers of the game.

At 3-3, the England winger could have gone on to win the match for Man City after Spurs had pulled a goal back late on, with Dejan Kulusevski scoring a header in the 90th minute.

But during his post-match interview, Guardiola was furious with the officials, and when asked if he had been given an explanation for the decision, he told beIN Sports: ‘No, the master of commander Anthony Taylor knows everything in this business and didn’t tell me anything.’

Despite that, the pair will meet on the touchline again on Wednesday with John Brooks set to take charge of proceedings as the referee for the match at Villa Park, while Paul Tierney and Scott Ledger will operate as the VAR and assistant VAR.

Taylor was demoted to the Championship back in November, in what was his first spell away from the top-flight since 2019 after he had awarded Newcastle with a controversial penalty during their 2-2 draw against Wolves on October 28.

He subsequently dropped down to oversee Preston’s clash against Coventry in the second tier before being recalled to oversee Man City’s 4-4 draw against Chelsea.

Hooper, meanwhile, who was also criticized by Erling Haaland after the match, will referee Sheffield United’s game against Liverpool, with Michael Oliver set to join him as the VAR for that match.

Guardiola had also said to Sky Sports that he would not make the same scathing comments that Mikel Arteta had, after the Arsenal boss had fumed at officials after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in November, branding the Magpies’ controversial goal a ‘disgrace’.

‘Next question, I will not do a Mikel Arteta comment,’ Guardiola said when asked about the incident.

Guardiola had also said he would not copy Mikel Arteta, who had also hit out at officials following Arsenal’s controversial 1-0 defeat by Newcastle

‘But it was a good game, that’s the most important thing, pity as think Liverpool game and today incredible performance in all departments. We created a lot of chances, were aggressive and feeling we want to be there.

‘Pity but football like life and sometimes don’t get what you deserve. Congratulations to Spurs and onto next.’

Last week, Taylor also showed a red card to Brighton’s Lewis Dunk who became the first player sent off for a foul and abusive language in more than 11 years, when the referee’s patience snapped during the Seagulls’ 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest.

Dunk meanwhile said he had spoken to Taylor straight after the match and apologised to the referee.
