A former Chelsea player, who was sent out on loan five times whilst at Stamford Bridge, has been slapped with an extended suspension by Major League Soccer after he stormed into a referee’s office after a match. Matt Miazga, who was on the Blues’ books from 2016 until 2022, was booked twice during FC Cincinnati’s MLS CUP playoff match against his former club New York Red Bulls on November 4.

Cincinnati eventually won the tie on penalties but defender Miazga landed himself in hot water after he allegedly gained unauthorised access to an area reserved for match officials after the match had ended, with the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) stating after the game that a player had been “forcibly removed” from the restricted area.

An investigation found the 28-year-old guilty of “misconduct” and suspended the defender to three matches as well as slapping him with a fine.

President of the PSRA Peter Manikowski told ESPN that the referee’s match report indicated that Miazga ‘entered the referee’s dressing room uninvited, used foul language and acted in an aggressive manner’.

The former Chelsea player was recently named MLS Defender of Year for 2023, but his season has effectively been ended early by the three-match suspension.

A statement published by MLS, who said: “The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended FC Cincinnati defender Matt Miazga for three matches and issued an undisclosed fine for his misconduct following FC Cincinnati’s match against the New York Red Bulls on November 4.

“Additionally, Miazga will undergo a behavioural assessment through the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Program and may petition for a reduction in suspension based on continued commitment and compliance with any recommended treatment programs.

“The suspension will be served during the remainder of FC Cincinnati’s games during the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs, with any remaining suspension served during the 2024 MLS regular season.”

New Jersy-born Miazga joined Chelsea from New York Red Bull in 2016 on a four-and-a-half-year deal for a reported £3.5 million fee.
