Manchester United’s board may have a new option to potentially replace Erik ten Hag if the Dutchman is deemed surplus to requirements as Max Allegri is reportedly interested in a move to the Premier League. Ten Hag earned high praise for his debut season in charge at Old Trafford, leading them to third in the table and the club’s first trophy in six years.

But second-season syndrome has hit Ten Hag hard this year with a 3-3 draw to Galatasaray the latest in a string of bad results. They’re now on the verge of elimination from the Champions League with the possibility of missing out on Europa League football as well.

A 3-0 win over Everton in the league last weekend helped things for the Red Devils in the table, but there’s still a nervous energy at Old Trafford in big games. It’s led to some talks on whether Ten Hag will be backed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe when he eventually takes over football operations from the Glazers.

The minority takeover is still to be completed, but changes are already taking place with Richard Arnold stepping down as CEO at the end of the year. If a change in the dugout is what Ratcliffe wants then an ideal replacement will be needed to step in midway through the season.

There aren’t many top managers currently available, but Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim Allegri could be allowed to leave Juventus. Allegri has been linked with the hotseat at United on numerous occasions, but no talks have ever seemingly materialised.

But it seems as though Juventus are happy to let Allegri go and he is said to favour a move to the Premier League as his next challenge. Patrice Evra has already given his seal of approval for Allegri, a man he describes as having more “flair” than United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
