Fans have been left smelling something ‘fishy’ after Galatasaray had an equaliser against Manchester United ruled out by the tightest of offside calls.

At the end of a breathless first half which saw Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes put United 2-0 up and Hakim Ziyech pull one back for the home side, Mauro Icardi appeared to beat the offside trap before coolly slotting past Andre Onana.

However, the offside flag was raised with the decision being approved by VAR thanks to the semi-automated offside system which is being used in the Champions League. However, replays of the incidents suggested Icardi was desperately unlucky to have his goal ruled out.

However, some fans were pleased with the efficiency of the system, which isn’t used in the Premier League. One said: “That Icardi offside would’ve genuinely taken 5 minutes in the Premier League.”

Another commented: “Semi-automated offside technology made this Icardi decision in less than 15 seconds. This is why leagues need to adopt it.”

It looked to be a key moment as United restored their two-goal lead through Scott McTominay 10 minutes into the second half. However, United showed their vulnerability again on 62 minutes when Onana fumbled Ziyech’s free-kick into the net.

The home then drew level on 71 minutes thanks to a sensational first touch and finish from Kerem Akturkoglu to set up a grandstand finish. Despite numerous chances for both sides, 3-3 is how it stayed.
