Former international footballer Papi Khomane tragically died in a car crash which also claimed the lives of his mum and uncle.

The 48-year-old, who made nine appearances in defence for South Africa between 1998 and 2000, was travelling to a funeral with his two relatives on Saturday (November 25) morning when their vehicle was involved in a collision.

The cause of the accident remains unclear but they all passed away as a result of the horror smash. Mourning the death of their former captain, the Orlando Pirates – for whom Khomane played for nine years – issued a heartfelt statement.

It read: "The club was informed by his father and another Bucs legend, Yster Khomane, who confirmed that both his son and his wife Mrs Rita Khomane were involved in a motor vehicle accident today.

"Papi was a man of few words, but his presence on the pitch spoke volumes. His transformation from a quiet individual into a formidable leader during games was nothing short of inspirational.

"During his nine years with us Papi made over 150 appearances, each time exemplifying what it meant to be a Buccaneer.

"We cannot speak of Papi and Yster Khomane without honouring the remarkable woman behind their successes – Mrs Rita Khomane. Rita was the cornerstone of support for both her husband and her son."

Khomane started his career in his home country with Jomo Cosmos. He moved to join the Pirates, following in the footsteps of dad Yster, in 1998, the same year he won his national team debut.

He went on to help South Africa to a third-placed finish at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations alongside the likes of Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe and ex-Manchester United star Quinton Fortune. His club career concluded in 2007.
