Former Newcastle star Nobby Solano believes that Eddie Howe must try to replicate the success of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at St James’ Park. The Magpies are expected to splash the cash in the January transfer window, and they have been told to look for players that will take the club to the next level or risks coming under pressure in the future.

Howe has sensationally rebuilt Newcastle since his arrival at the club in 2021, guiding the club to the Champions League last season and gradually raising the standards of the squad whilst complying with Financial Fair Play regulations.

The former Bournemouth boss has been heavily praised for his work, and ex-Toon Army hero Solano believes that the 45-year-old now must look to the January transfer window to improve his squad once again – taking inspiration from how well Klopp has recruited over the years.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport ahead of Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I and TNT Sports ‘pub takeover’ for Newcastle’s clash with PSG on Tuesday, Solano explained: “I believe Eddie will know, with all the experienced people around him, how they need to be competitive like Manchester City or like Liverpool. Like how Klopp has done for Liverpool as a club, they will be saying ‘Eddie, look around and see’ (how other clubs are operating).

Signing (Darwin) Nunez from Uruguay, he’s working so well for the team, (Luis) Diaz from Colombia.

“The next step for Eddie has to be starting to sign top, top players that can handle all competitions because, at some point, the rich people that have arrived at the club have to be successful. Eddie knows that.”
