Late ex-England boss Terry Venables once left one of his Tottenham players "stunned" by the quality of his singing voice.

Venables, whose death aged 80 was sadly announced today (November 26), earned comparisons to Frank Sinatra from former Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham, who also played under him for the Three Lions.

Speaking about their first meeting in north London back in 1992, Sheringham discussed a club called Scribes, which was owned by ex-Barcelona boss Venables.

READ MORE: Terry Venables had 'long illness' before death and was forced to end playing career early

He revealed that there would be karaoke on offer to punters during Saturday night events at the club, and that he was invited to attend after his move from Nottingham Forest.

Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes in 2021, Sheringham recalled: "He'd take the microphone, and the first time I saw him I'm just thinking 'my new boss, here, this should be interesting. Is he gonna embarrass himself?'

"But wow. I'd heard he had a good voice but it was stunning. It was very nice, Frank Sinatra-esque."

Venables was highly-thought of by Sheringham, who rated him as the best manager he worked for during his legendary career – even above Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I was very lucky to play under some fantastic managers but top of the pile has to be Terry Venables," he said on Monday Night Football last year.

"I was playing under him at the peak of my career during my time at Spurs and for England, and obviously playing for Sir Alex at Manchester United, he was unbelievable."

Explaining what it was that Venables was so good at, Sheringham added: "He had a wonderful way about telling us about what he wanted without confusing issues.

"He had a lovely way of making you feel and then you go out on the pitch, and you feel ten feet tall. He gave you that extra bit of confidence and he had that crafty sort of character, you could have a bit of fun as well and he made you feel relaxed.

"But when you worked, you worked. He was a top tactician that was ahead of his time."
