Tottenham cult hero Pascal Chimbonda has started his management career at a bottom side in the ninth tier of English football. The Frenchman had a respectable career which included two spells with Tottenham as Harry Redknapp brought the popular player back to White Heart Lane for a second term in 2009.

After a successful playing career in the English top divisions the full-back dropped down the leagues ending up at North West Counties side Ashton Town in the 10th tier before playing his final game and leaving in March 2019. After moving into coaching he was appointed as manager of Skelmersdale United last month who sit bottom of the North West Counties Premier.

Skelmersdale are eight points adrift at the bottom with eight points from their 23 games going into Saturday’s game against Bury. Chimbonda is now learning his trade in very different surroundings to that where he won the League Cup in 2008, when Tottenham beat Chelsea at Wembley.

Despite starting towards the bottom of the football pyramid Chimbonda has lofty ambitions for his coaching career. The Daily Mail report him saying: “I don’t know why this bias is still there because there are so many good black coaches who played a high level of football and you never see them involved in coaching or on different boards in football.

“I have had many people telling me ‘don’t give up’. One day maybe it will happen and you will open the door for other black coaches to be involved in the football industry. This challenge, if I have to accept it to go into football, I open my arms for it.

“I’m really pleased they gave me that opportunity to express myself. There are still plenty of games to go. I’m going to shake that tree, try to build a good base and come out of this bottom of the table.

Don’t miss…
