{"id":298019,"date":"2023-11-24T11:23:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-24T11:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/?p=298019"},"modified":"2023-11-24T11:23:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-24T11:23:59","slug":"jamie-carragher-selects-his-england-midfield-for-euro-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/soccer\/jamie-carragher-selects-his-england-midfield-for-euro-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamie Carragher selects his England midfield for Euro 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Jamie Carragher reveals his England star to play alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in &#8216;exciting&#8217; midfield and take Gareth Southgate&#8217;s side to Euro 2024 glory\u00a0<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Gareth Southgate is faced with a few selection dilemmas\u00a0ahead of Euro 2024<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>One spot is up for grabs in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Inside Postecoglou&#8217;s Tottenham: IAKO looks at culture and philosophy changes\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jamie Carragher has named the England midfield combination he believes can make them Euro 2024 challengers next summer.<\/p>\n<p>Gareth Southgate&#8217;s side qualified for their eighth successive major tournament with ease last month following a 3-1 victory over Italy at Wembley.<\/p>\n<p>They faced two further Euro 2024 qualifying fixtures over the past week, beating Malta 2-0 last Friday and drawing 1-1 with North Macedonia on Monday evening\u00a0and are now all set for the tournament&#8217;s group stage draw on December 2.<\/p>\n<p>Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are undoubtedly Southgate&#8217;s first choice options in midfield, and the likes of Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been tried alongside them in recent international fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>The position remains up for grabs and the utilisation of Alexander-Arnold there is a topic that has generated much discussion in recent times, with the 25-year-old featuring in midfield against Malta and North Macedonia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/10\/78192817-12786897-image-a-33_1700821925331.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jamie Carragher has revealed the England midfield combination he would select at Euro 2024<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/10\/78192791-12786897-image-a-34_1700822047527.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are the first choice options, but there is another spot open<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/10\/78192793-12786897-image-a-35_1700822069888.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Southgate has tried several options such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kalvin Phillips there<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>While he tends to perform a hybrid dual role for Liverpool, Southgate has listed him as a midfielder in recent squads and first used him there in a 2021 World Cup qualifier against Andorra, which led to Jurgen Klopp\u00a0questioning the decision.<\/p>\n<p>However, Carragher felt it was a move that made sense and claimed Alexander-Arnold deserved a place in England&#8217;s midfield for next summer&#8217;s tournament in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Southgate demonstrated his foresight when identifying this a few years ago, initially criticised for using Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder,&#8217; he told his column in The Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Although England were not great against Malta and North Macedonia, there was plenty to like about Alexander-Arnold\u2019s performances, especially in the first game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;An exciting, balanced midfield trio of Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Alexander-Arnold can take the national team close to winning Euro 2024. They would be my first choice.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on international duty last week, Alexander-Arnold hinted an opportunity further forward is something he relishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He had said: &#8216;My specific skillset and what I\u2019m best at is someone who plays in the middle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/10\/78192755-12786897-image-a-36_1700822103896.jpg\" height=\"452\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Alexander-Arnold played in midfield against both Malta and North Macedonia (pictured) last week and Carragher felt he impressed enough to be picked at next summer&#8217;s tournament\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/10\/78192759-12786897-image-a-37_1700822153106.jpg\" height=\"505\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>His role as a midfielder for the Three Lions is different to his hybrid dual role for Liverpool<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You probably get more out of me from being in the middle and I\u2019m able to show off that skillset as much as possible.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>And Carragher felt these comments from Alexander-Arnold were more than fair, pointing to the challenge he will face balancing his duties in this weekend&#8217;s mouthwatering clash against Man City.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;What other playmakers in the world are expected to run the game from midfield with the ball, only to go chasing speedy left wingers without it?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Whether he is facing Jeremy Doku or Jack Grealish on Saturday, the expectation for Alexander-Arnold to deliver at both ends of the pitch is massive.
