First, Christian Horner claims Lewis Hamilton\u2019s people contacted him to see if there might be a seat available at the world championship-winning Red Bull team.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on Thursday, ahead of the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hamilton makes the counter-claim that Horner got in touch with him, citing a convoluted story about an old phone on which he belatedly recovered a message from his would-be suitor.<\/p>\n<p>And into the mix, Hamilton\u2019s extraordinary claim that Horner was acting mischievously out of loneliness \u2014 a random and poisonous accusation that seems to have come from nowhere particularly.<\/p>\n<p>This was the fallout from our exclusive story in which Horner recalled a message he received earlier in the year when Hamilton\u2019s contract negotiations at Mercedes were long drawn out, prior to his finally signing for \u00a3100million in total for the next two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he had approached Red Bull, Hamilton said: \u2018No. I did not. I checked with everyone in my team and nobody has spoken to them but they have tried to reach out to us.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/12\/78157199-12783949-image-a-2_1700742940265.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lewis Hamilton has hit out at Christian Horner for claiming he wanted to move to Red Bull<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/14\/78119431-12783949-Horner_said_a_representative_of_Hamilton_asked_about_becoming_Ma-a-13_1700748998264.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Horner said a representative of Hamilton asked about becoming Max Verstappen&#8217;s team-mate\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first part of that statement is technically true, but a Red Bull spokesman confirmed that it was Hamilton\u2019s father Anthony, rather than a paid member of his staff, who got in touch with Horner. Asked about the situation, Hamilton said: \u2018Christian messaged me. I would be more than happy to race against Max Verstappen in the same car. That would be wonderful. But I don\u2019t think he wants me to be his team-mate.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The plot thickens, with Hamilton claiming: \u2018I picked up my old phone which I just found at home. It has my old number. I switched it on and hundreds of messages came through and one was from Christian to get together and have a catch-up at the end of the season.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Why Horner would want to chit-chat with him at the end of the campaign is unclear. Pressed on whether Horner had specifically brought up the idea of driving for them, Hamilton repeated: \u2018He just said about having a catch-up.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he thought it strange Horner had mentioned his name this week, the Briton said: \u2018Not really. There are a lot of people here who like to drop my name in conversation because they know it will make waves.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And if you are a little bit lonely and are not getting much attention that is the perfect thing to do. He\u2019s stirring things.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I did tell Toto (Wolff, about the claimed contact from Horner). I have so much respect for him and we have a great relationship. If people think those things (about leaving) it is never positive. I replied to him (Horner) on my new phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was months later. I just said congratulations on the amazing season and that I hope we are able to compete with you soon, and he replied repeating the same thing (presumably about catching up).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Just stepping into the best car wouldn\u2019t do much for me. Working with my team to beat them would be better for my legacy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It seems Mercedes are feeling the pressure as their form runs at a low tide.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest blow, team principal Wolff was called before the stewards for using the f-word during a press conference in Las Vegas last week.
