Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom believes Everton’s points deduction could open the door for a raft of other clubs to be punished.

The Toffees were docked 10 points last week for breaching Premier League financial rules over a three-year period, plummeting them from 14th in the table into the relegation zone.

The Blades moved up in the table as a result, but Heckingbottom insists it will have no positive impact on his side.

‘That is not going to help us get the points we need, so we are not considering it,’ he said. ‘It is a bigger issue in football than it is for us at Sheffield United.

‘It is a big decision and a big change and it could open the door for other big decisions. It is bigger and more relevant for wider football than it is for us.

‘If and when that did happen I don’t know. The rules are there, you can’t punish one team and not another. It happened to us last season for a totally different issue.

‘The rules are there for a reason. There has to be consistency in decisions like that. It is a bigger more interesting discussion for wider football than it is for us.’

Everton were looking set for a comfortable season until the penalty hit last week.

But Heckingbottom, whose side face a crunch game with Bournemouth on Saturday, does not expect Sean Dyche’s side to be in any trouble.

‘Anyone who has seen all their games, they have been a threat in all of their games,’ he said. ‘I saw them against Aston Villa where they were second best but apart from that they have created chances, they have got results that they would have liked and they could have easily got more.

‘If their form continues I don’t see a problem for them and they can maybe use this and galvanise them and their group and spirit if they think they have been wrongly dealt with.

‘If I am an Everton fan I would not be too worried about their performances so far, 10 points will hurt them but if they are the rules you have to expect everyone to be dealt with like that.’

The Sheffield United boss believes Sean Dyche’s team will be safe despite the 10-point penalty

Everton feel the punishment handed down to them last week was ‘unjust’ and will appeal against the biggest sanction in Premier League history.

In a statement released on Friday, they declared they would ‘monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules’.

This appeared to allude to how Manchester City currently have 115 charges hanging over them from back in February for allegedly breaking financial rules.
