Harry Maguire has called on the Premier League to lead the way in saving football from a VAR penalty fiasco. The Manchester United defender is sick of the pressure being put on players in an environment where the slightest touch can cost their team a vital spot-kick.

Rico Lewis’s England debut was nearly spoiled by the softest of penalties given against him in North Macedonia and Maguire’s heart was in his mouth when he stumbled on the treacherous pitch and put his arms on his opponent’s back to steady himself.

Now, he has declared, things have to change. “Nowadays, penalties are given for everything,” he said. “Absolutely for everything.

“I understand it’s an important part of the game, what should be a penalty, what shouldn’t be a penalty but there’s far too many soft penalties given at the moment. In the last six months, a year or so, especially in the Premier League, all over the world really, the Champions League, they are given for anything.

“They are making life so hard for defenders to defend the way it should be. You should be able to defend, you should be able to move your arm, you should be able to move your body, you should be able to make contact, you should be able to move your hands and get there.

“The threshold of giving penalties definitely needs to change. And I think the Premier League, the biggest league in the world, needs to start it, need to come up with something because I’ve seen some penalties in the Premier League since the start of this season which, for me, are just ridiculous.”

In the opening 12 rounds of the competition, 35 penalties have already been awarded, which on average would result in 111 kicks over the course of the season.
