Travis Head modestly claimed he does not belong on the same stage as Australia’s cricketing heroes after hitting an incredible century to win the World Cup final.

Head stunned a 130,000-strong crowd into silence with a sensational 137-run knock to clinch a sixth world title for his nation and provide Pat Cummins with his greatest moment as captain of the Australian team.

The opener’s innings will go down in history as one of the best contributions in white ball cricket, but when told that he has joined Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting as the only Australians to score a ton in a World Cup final, Head remained humble.

‘I’m definitely third on that list,’ he said. ‘It’s nice to be here, nice to contribute… I said to the boys, I’m looking forward to the reunion!’

Head was drafted into the squad halfway through the tournament after being sidelined with an injury, but hit the ground running to help his side in emphatic fashion.

Travis Head was typically modest when told he is forever in the record books

He became just the third Australian to score a century in the World Cup final

‘Not in a million years [did I think this could happen],’ he added. ‘What an amazing day, I’m just thrilled to be part of it. It’s a lot better than sitting on the couch at home. Very lucky that everything went well with my rehab and I was able to get back here.

‘I was a little bit nervous for the first 20 balls but Marnus played exceptionally – it’s awesome to bat with him, he soaks up the pressure, and it was just an amazing partnership.

‘Mitch Marsh set the tone for us, even if he didn’t take it on. It was a great decision to bowl first. The wicket took a bit of spin but it got better as the day went on. It’s gonna be an amazing couple of days now.’

Marnus Labuschagne was equally elated after his side’s triumph.

‘Mate, it’s the best achievement I’ve ever been part of. India have been the team of the tournament, they’ve been unbelievable, but… you know, if we played our best cricket we’re a chance,’ he said.

Head guided Australia to their sixth world title with a stunning knock on Sunday

‘I’m a man of faith, I believe in God, and the way things have panned out for me in this tournament has been unbelievable.

‘Three months ago I wasn’t even in the squad for South Africa, so to play 19 games straight is a miracle.

‘I’m lost for words. The amount of times I thought, “I’m done”. Even last night, the team wasn’t named until about 10 to 10. My eyes went to the ground.’
