The intrusion, only eight minutes into the super-duper new race, caused a postponement to second practice lasting two-and-a-half hours for repairs to be carried out on the precarious covers through the application of quick-setting concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas world champion Max Verstappen could claim to have been vindicated in his verdict on Las Vegas\u2019s evolving first dance in front of Sin City\u2019s spectacular backdrop by calling it \u201899 per cent show and one per cent sport\u2019, the Mercedes team principal demonstrated how hard and fast some of Formula One\u2019s money men will run with the sport\u2019s American owners, Liberty Media, come what may.<\/p>\n<p>Other than Verstappen, every other high-roller in the F1 circus complied with Liberty\u2019s appeals to back the Vegas project. \u2018Good for the sport,\u2019 they chimed, and so they believed, and not unreasonably. \u2018Good for the share price of all,\u2019 or so they hoped.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Wolff, in contrast to Verstappen, was unconcerned by the unfolding mess of the practice sessions that had seen Sainz\u2019s red car suck the manhole cover out of the tarmac at 198mph. Wolff\u2019s high-handed dismissal of developments perhaps showed the pressure he is feeling at the ailing Mercedes team.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945231-12763281-image-m-14_1700254414609.jpg\" height=\"414\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Toto Wolff&#8217;s dismissal of the events of Thursday night demonstrated his fealty to F1&#8217;s American owners Liberty Media<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945253-12763281-image-a-15_1700254430683.jpg\" height=\"402\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A loose manhole cover destroyed Carlos Sainz&#8217;s Ferrari during FP1, which was abandoned after eight minutes<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945257-12763281-image-a-16_1700254433801.jpg\" height=\"421\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>What followed was a scramble to secure the track&#8217;s manhole covers at lightning speed<\/p>\n<p>And he made himself look foolish in his blind belief that all was well on the night \u2014 despite tens of thousands of fans leaving the track of their own volition or being asked to do so because of labour laws requiring security staff to knock off before the second, belated session had begun at 2.30am (let alone finished at an absurd 4am).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That is not a black eye,\u2019 claimed Wolff, denying the nose-bloodying repercussions of the chaos.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nobody is going to talk about this tomorrow morning.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When I suggested that his draft of history might not be entirely unchallengeable, he exploded in rage: \u2018It\u2019s completely ridiculous! How can you even dare to talk back about an event that sets the new standards for everything?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And then you are speaking about a f***ing drain cover that\u2019s been undone. That\u2019s happened before. That\u2019s nothing; it\u2019s FP1.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Give credit to the people that have set up this grand prix, that have made this sport much bigger than it ever was. Have you ever spoken good about someone, or written a good word? You should, about all these people that have been out here.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Liberty have done an awesome job, just because a drain cover in FP1 has come undone we shouldn\u2019t be moaning. The car (of Sainz) is broken. That\u2019s really a shame. For Carlos, it could have been dangerous. So between the FIA, the track, everybody needs to analyse to make sure this doesn\u2019t happen again. But talking here about a black eye for the sport on a Thursday evening&#8230; nobody\u2019s watching on European time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nobody was watching it anywhere, Toto! Not while nothing was happening.<\/p>\n<p>A cynic might say Wolff\u2019s intemperate answer is linked to the fact his wife, Susie, is financially connected to F1 through her role as managing director of its associated F1 Academy, the women\u2019s series. He also once harboured desires, no longer entertained by Liberty, of succeeding Stefano Domenicali as F1 chief executive.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, Domenicali, who declined press interviews, was said by one witness to be as white as a ghost as he grappled with his sport disappearing from the track.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945263-12763281-image-a-17_1700254439602.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Mercedes team principal lashed out at suggestions that the incident would be a &#8216;black eye&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945283-12763281-image-a-18_1700254481802.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>But Stefano Domenicali was thought to cut an ashen figure in the paddock following the delays<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/20\/77945261-12763281-image-a-19_1700254485975.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur (centre) deemed his driver&#8217;s accident &#8216;unacceptable&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Las Vegas extravaganza is the first race Liberty have run themselves rather than handed to a local promoter for a fee. It\u2019s apparently not as easy to pull it off as they thought. But, in fairness, their vision and success in securing a race on the Strip is commendable, as Wolff says.<\/p>\n<p>And it is not the only time manhole covers have caused problems on street circuits.
