Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has picked out Mason Mount as a future football broadcaster after hinting that Jermaine Jenas could take his job.

The former Everton, Tottenham and England striker has been fronting Match of the Day since 1999 but has admitted in recent months that he might not be in the role for too much longer.

Having joked on air that Jenas wanted the role, he has now been asked which current stars could have a future in the business – picking out the Manchester United midfielder after spending time with him back in 2018.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, Lineker spoke about current stars who could end up in the hottest hotseat in English football broadcasting.

He said: "Kasper Schmeichel as a goalkeeper, very good. His dad’s done lots of punditry, that’s not a bad shout. Can you remember Alan, when we did the World Cup in Moscow and there were three young footballers?

"And Mason Mount sat in my chair and was doing a few things to camera, and he wasn’t too bad. Who knows, maybe Mason Mount, we’ll see."

Another name brought up was James Maddison, with Lineker adding: "He’s very eloquent and he’s very good tactically. I think he’s the best of the players in the post-match interview."

Mount will first be focussing on finding his feet at United following a £55million move from boyhood club Chelsea in the summer. He has made 11 appearances for Erik ten Hag and struggled in big matches as well as being yet to find a confidence-boosting first goal.

The 24-year-old will also be desperate to get back into England contention before the end of the season, with Euro 2024 next summer.
