The frustration from me came to our approach to matches, our training gear, and it came to a head.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/15\/11\/47124843-12752149-Roy_Keane_had_busts_up_with_Mick_McCarthy_before_the_1994_and_20-a-33_1700046251951.jpg\" height=\"511\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Roy Keane grew frustrated with Mick McCarthy&#8217;s reign and &#8216;unacceptable&#8217; preparation\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/15\/11\/47125403-12752149-Keane_was_sent_home_from_Ireland_following_his_bust_up_with_McCa-m-35_1700046283651.jpg\" height=\"550\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In one of Irish sport&#8217;s most famous moments, Keane was sent home from the 2002 World Cup\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The tipping point was the 2002 World Cup. I showed my frustration, but that doesn\u2019t mean to say I wouldn\u2019t turn up and do the business in a game. People missed the point with me leaving the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There\u2019s always been question marks about my commitment to playing for Ireland from the media \u2013 I missed one game. The manager felt he wanted to bring that game up in front of a group of players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We qualified months in advance \u2013 if that happened with England, France, Germany, and there was no training gear, no footballs, no bibs, <span><\/span><span>you\u2019d be a laughing stock<\/span><span><\/span>. But for some reason, when it was Ireland\u2026 I\u2019d had enough of that. I had my debate with Mick \u2013 I said this is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I had media commitments, and I said one or two things that I wasn\u2019t happy with. Mick McCarthy was very much in bed with the Irish media \u2013 which is another story.\u00a0Mick also questioned me then \u2013 I\u2019d been asked by a reporter if I respected Mick, and I said no, I didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I told the reporter that it was private, and that was it. Word got back to Mick, and in the meeting, I said in front of the lads that I didn\u2019t respect him, after the accusations about me missing the game. Just because I didn\u2019t respect him, didn\u2019t mean I wasn\u2019t going to try.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mick pulled me to the side and said \u2018if you don\u2019t respect me, how can you play for me?\u2019 I thought that I wasn\u2019t playing for him \u2013,I was playing for my country. But I said to him &#8220;alright, I won&#8217;t [play].&#8221; I walked out of the team meeting &#8211; no regrets about it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/15\/11\/77825263-12752149-image-a-37_1700046362898.jpg\" height=\"450\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Keane had long had gripes with how the Ireland national team was run and says he has &#8216;no regrets&#8217; regarding his fall-out with McCarthy<\/p>\n<p>According to Irish media at the time, Keane was understood to have told McCarthy: &#8216;Mick, you&#8217;re a liar\u2026 you&#8217;re a f****** w*****. I didn&#8217;t rate you as a player, I don&#8217;t rate you as a manager, and I don&#8217;t rate you as a person.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy claimed that he had taken the squad to Saipan for a &#8216;holiday&#8217; and that preparations would begin in earnest when the touched down in Japan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sending Keane home from Ireland&#8217;s third-ever World Cup was a decision that divided the nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While captain of the side, Keane challenged not only McCarthy but also former manager Jack Charlton and the Football Association of Ireland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He had consistent gripes about their training, travel arrangements, diet, and strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland went on to finish second in their group but were knocked out in the last 16 by Spain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/15\/11\/77825431-12752149-image-a-39_1700046438645.jpg\" height=\"459\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He said that before one match against the Netherlands, pizza was laid on as the cuisine\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keane continued with Stick to Football: &#8216;I never went down the road of judging people, just because I started looking after my body a bit more. It doesn\u2019t mean I didn\u2019t go out or would sit there and judge people for having a few pints.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;What I did want from the group of people at Ireland was progress \u2013 and when Mick McCarthy got the job, he came to my house in Manchester. I told him we had to do things properly. We played Holland away, had a training session at the stadium. The night before the match, I was looking for food and there was a bit of pizza!<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;People always had in their head that I was never really committed to the cause, rubbish that people were writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mick was in bed with all these guys anyway \u2013 the same people writing stuff about me, Mick was enjoying their company and writing books for them.
