Staff members from Brazilian side Corinthians attempted to storm the VAR room after a controversial red card in their league clash with Gremio on Sunday.

Taking on title-chasing Gremio away from home, Corinthians were incensed when they were not given a penalty inside the opening 10 minutes after their attacker appeared to be hauled down in the box by an opposing defender.

The referee, Rodrigo Pereira de Lima, waved play on with the ball rolling through to the Gremio goalkeeper. He proceeded to throw the ball out to his team-mate, and Corinthians defender Bruno Mendez came flying in with a challenge, missing the ball and taking out his opponent completely.

Initially, Lima brandished a yellow card, while the Corinthians players complained about him denying them a penalty. However, VAR then told him that the tackle required a second look, and after assessing it on the pitchside monitor he changed his decision and upgraded to a red card.

The Corinthians players could hardly believe the decision, and some of their staff, including director of football and ex-player Alessandro Nunes, were having none of it.

Security had to block the doors to stop Corinthians staff breaking into the VAR room

The Corinthians staff were furious and wanted filming to be stopped after being refused entry to the VAR room

They decided to run towards the VAR room inside the stadium and were filmed banging on the door as they tried to get in.

Multiple security guards were forced to step in and block the doors to protect the officials from any potential harm.

The staff members struggled to control their emotions after being refused entry to the VAR room, and one was seen hitting a camera that was filming the chaotic scenes as they played out.

Despite playing the majority of the game with 10 men, Corinthians still managed to pick up an impressive 1-0 victory.

Paraguayan winger Angel Romero netted the winner in the 32nd minute, and Gremio also finished the match with 10 players after their centre back Bruno Alves was sent off with nine minutes remaining.

The game saw both teams reduced to 10 men, with Corinthians eventually beating Gremio 1-0

His red card came after an ugly lunge on Corinthians midfielder Fagner, and there were few complaints over the referee’s decision on this occasion.

Corinthians’ staff trying to break into the VAR room capped off a remarkable week for the side that also saw their goalkeeper grab the headlines for his actions just three days earlier against Atletico Mineiro.

Experienced shot-stopper Cassio did not make an attempt to save a free-kick in the second half, allowing the ball to go straight into his goal.

However, it proved to be a moment of genius, as he had realised that it was an indirect free-kick and the goal would not stand if he did not touch the ball.
