Megan Rapinoe has claimed that her Achilles injury just three minutes into the NWSL final against Gotham FC is “proof” that God doesn’t exist. The USWNT football icon made the comments\u00a0in a controversial post-match interview following the team’s 2-1 defeat in what was her last competitive game.<\/p>\n
Rapinoe was named in the starting line-up for the highly anticipated match. The 38-year-old was hoping to make a final impact on the field before retirement but instead fell to the ground just three minutes in.<\/p>\n
She had to be substituted for Bethan Balcer and was met with a rapturous applause from fans inside\u00a0San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium. Rapinoe was embraced by fellow USWNT icon Ali Krieger – also playing the final game of her career.<\/p>\n
Speaking shortly after the defeat, Rapinoe claimed that her injury proves that there is no God before breaking out into hysterics alongside teammate Rose Lavelle.<\/p>\n
“This is a long one,” she said when asked about her injury. “Although I’m going to get the Aaron Rodgers treatment, what ever that is. So I’m going to be calling him or whoever did his surgery because we need to speed this up.<\/p>\n
“But, I thought about it a little bit. I mean, I’m not a religious person or anything and if there was a God then this is proof that there isn’t. This is f***ed up. It’s just f***** up, you know? It’s like six minutes to f****** yeet my Achilles and let me know. What the f***.<\/p>\n
“I guess I just rode until the wheels came right off!,” Rapinoe added. “Now I’m just a NARP, a normal-a** regular person, having to do rehab which is f***ing devastating. You gotta find the silver lining and the dark humor, and that’s just who I am as well.”<\/p>\n
