Raheem Sterling has deepened his resolve to win his England place back – and it could be Manchester City who suffer the brunt of it. For the fifth England call-up in a row, one of the most senior Three Lions was overlooked by Gareth Southgate for the international double-header against Malta and North Macedonia later this month.

Only Harry Kane has been capped more times than the Chelsea winger – but Sterling right now seems persona non grata despite a return to form at club level. The 28-year-old last played for England in the ill-fated World Cup quarter-final against France in December in Qatar.

He was injured for the European qualifiers in March but seems to have slid down the pecking order in particular when he asked to focus on his fitness when Southgate wanted to select him for the two summer internationals in June.

Good attacking performances by England in the two games against Malta and North Macedonia resulted in 11 goals over the two games and Southgate has resolutely kept faith with those players throughout the autumn internationals.

“Who should I drop to bring Raheem in?” Southgate asked rhetorically. The announcement came just three days after Sterling had inspired Chelsea to put nine-man Tottenham out of their misery in the bizarre clash at White Hart Lane. He was also a strong performer in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal – indeed it was only within seconds of Sterling being substituted that the Gunners scored their equaliser.

Only a year ago, Sterling was on a journey to become one of England’s best players in the World Cup and after that tournament once again ended in disappointment, he is even more determined to be part of something special should it come along having spent so long in the darker days of the international doldrums.

Southgate has spoken about the importance of experience and his 10 trophies and 82 caps mean he will always be a useful part of any major tournament squad.

There is nothing to suggest he has lost any of his pace and it is the need to bed outside players in as quickly as possible at Chelsea that has at times seen him surrounded by Premier League newcomers that he has forced to mentor to an extent.
