Manchester United legend David Beckham has revealed he had no idea his name was spelt wrong on his shirt the first time he donned the iconic number seven for the club in a competitive fixture.

Back in 1997, Beckham inherited the number seven shirt from Eric Cantona, who retired at the end of Man United's successful Premier League title winning 1996/97 campaign. Beckham was coming off the back of two impressive seasons at Old Trafford, and seemed the obvious choice to take up the mantle.

Come August, United were ready to embark on title defence, beginning their season at Wembley in the Charity Shield where they faced off against Chelsea. And it was Beckham and co who prevailed as winners in the season curtain raiser, defeating the Blues 4-2 on penalties.

However, in what was his first competitive fixture wearing the number seven for United, Beckham's name was actually misspelled by kit man Albert Morgan, with his shirt actually reading 'Beckam'. Recently Beckham appeared on ClassicFootballShirts' 'Career in Shirts' YouTube series, where footballers discuss the shirts they have worn and the stories behind them.

And speaking to ClassicFootballShirts, Beckham revealed he had no idea his name had been spelt wrong until he stepped off the pitch at Wembley.

"Just going back to the number seven, for the first time you wore number seven for Manchester United, it was actually, in a competitive match, in the Charity Shield in 1997 – the misprint. Were you familiar with it at the time," asked presenter Ellis Platten.

"I was familiar with it at the time," replied Beckham."But, I actually wasn't aware of it until I stepped off the pitch. Yeah, I wasn't aware that it had been spelt differently but that was Albert Morgan the kit man. That was one of his mistakes. His only mistake!"

Beckham was then asked by Platten, to which he replied immediately: "No, no, not at all. It's not hard to spell my name!"

And that wasn't the only story Beckham told about his United shirts. The now owner of MLS side Inter Miami also revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson took away the number 10 shirt and gave it to Teddy Sheringham, a season after he had netted 12 goals in all competitions for the club.

"I remember being on holiday in Malta and my phone ringing," said Beckham. "And we [United] just signed Teddy Sheringham and it was ‘Hi, it’s the boss’, and I was like okay boss, this is something different. He said: ‘We’re signing Teddy Sheringham, we’re taking the number 10."
