Callum Wilson is a doubt for Newcastle’s trip to Bournemouth and England’s forthcoming fixtures, putting Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah on standby for a recall.

The striker will undergo tests on a tight hamstring on Friday and there is a feeling Newcastle would prefer their player to rest during the international break, especially given their current injury troubles. Fellow frontman Alexander Isak is still absent with a groin problem.

Should Wilson miss Saturday’s game at Bournemouth – or be fit enough only for the bench – then Anthony Gordon would likely deputise at centre-forward, and he is also a player on Gareth Southgate’s radar.

Howe added: ‘We’re going to see how he is this morning (Friday). Gareth, England and ourselves will be in constant communication anyway, as we are with all our international players, to make sure their welfare is thought about at all times.’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be another option for Southgate, whose side face Malta at Wembley next Friday before a trip to North Macedonia on Monday.

They need one win to guarantee finishing top of their group and securing top seed for Euro 2024.
