Mikel Arteta fumes at Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola claims there is “confusion” about the officiating in every country, not just the Premier League, after the PGMOL came under fire once again over the weekend. Mikel Arteta branded the video assistant referee’s decision to allow Newcastle’s goal during the Gunner’s 1-0 loss on Saturday as “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”.

Anthony Gordon was awarded the only goal of the game after three VAR checks – the first to see if the ball had gone out of play before it was crossed into the former Toffees star, the second to check if Gabriel Magahales had been fouled in the Arsenal box and the third to determine whether there was an offside.

After completing their checks, VAR ruled that the goal should stand as Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an abrupt end. “I have to be here now to say it is not acceptable,” Arteta told Sky Sports when asked about the goal.

“We didn’t deserve to lose the match. We lost the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It’s embarrassing. A disgrace. That’s what it is – a disgrace. You cannot imagine the amount of messages I got saying this cannot continue. I am wasting my time. We are wasting our time. I don’t want to be in the hands of people.”

Guardiola has also previously expressed his frustrations with the standard of officiating in the Premier League but doesn’t feel there is much of a difference in the Champions League or anywhere else for that matter.

“There is a little bit of difference. for example, handball. A few things but I don’t know…. I have the feeling in every country there is confusion about things,” he said when asked about the difference between Premier League and Champions League refereeing during his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s European clash with Young Boys on Wednesday.

“Emotions after the game feelings are so high. It’s difficult to handle it – I’m talking about me, not Mikel Arteta or any other manager. We cannot talk to the fourth officials, we cannot do anything. It didn’t change much from last season.”
