A furious Jamie Carragher has condemned Luton Town fans after they were heard singing a tragedy chant directed at Liverpool during their Premier League game.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Liverpool drew 1-1 with Luton at Kenilworth road on Sunday afternoon but the home fans were heard chanting the ‘always the victims’ chant.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The chant is often considered to be linked with the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, and is widely condemned in the football world.\u00a0<\/p>\n
An independent panel and fresh inquests exonerated Liverpool fans of any blame for the disaster that saw 97 people killed in a stadium crush during an FA Cup game against Sheffield United.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Former Reds defender Carragher has slammed Luton fans for singing the chant and has insisted supporters ‘have to be better than that’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luton fans could be heard chanting\u00a0<\/p>\n
Carragher remarked on Sky Sports at halftime: ‘ I just want to mention something, the start of the season was involved in something with supporters coming together about tragedy chanting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘I just heard in a couple times during this game, you’ve got to have rivalry but we are better than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Two or three times in game, a few minutes ago as well. All clubs been guilty of that over the years but world we live in right now we are better than that.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
There has been incidents over the years of rival supporters using the tragedy to mock Liverpool\u00a0fans and that appears to have been the case at Luton.<\/p>\n
A statement at the beginning of the season by the Premier League condemned the use of tragedy chanting, with heavy punishments set for fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the past there has also been tragedy chants directed at Manchester United about the Munich air disaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The statement read: ‘Premier League clubs unanimously agreed at the Annual General Meeting today to a series of new measures to address the unacceptable rise in anti-social behaviour involving football tragedy-related chanting, gesturing, graffiti, online abuse and other behaviours last season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
