Richard Keys came to the defence of Arsenal after he said they were slighted by the officials in their controversial 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

The Premier League giants lost their first league game of the season on Saturday (November 4) after succumbing to Anthony Gordon's second half winner at St James Park. The winger's goal drew the ire of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta who couldn't believe the winner had been given after a lengthy VAR check.

Three separate checks for a potential offside, a potential foul, and whether the ball had gone out of play had taken place before the goal was eventually given. Arsenal were condemned to a loss as the Spaniard lost his head in the post-match media scrum where he said he was "ashamed" to be part of the game.

He told reporters: "We have to talk about how the hell [Gordon's goal] stand up. It's incredible. I feel embarrassed. It's an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed, an absolute disgrace. Because it's not a goal." The 41-year-old said the goal shouldn't have stood for a number of reasons as he continued his fiery rant.

"For many reasons it's not a goal," he added. "There's too much at stake here. We put so much effort [in], it's so difficult to compete at this level. Again, it's an absolute disgrace." Following his epic outburst, Arteta had an unlikely ally in sports presenter Richard Keys who said the former Arsenal captain was completely right in his position.

The ex-Sky Sports presenter took to X where he wrote: "Arteta is spot on. Allowing that goal was embarrassing. Ok – ball might not have been out but it’s a clear push on Gabriel & Joelinton handles the ball before you can argue whether Gordon is offside. So 2 nailed on reasons to disallow it."

Arsenal fans were mesmerised that Keys agreed that their side had been hard done by given his past swipes at Arteta. One fan on the social media platform wrote: "Richard on our side, something really went against us today!" while another commented how dire the decision must have been if the 66-year-old was on their side: "Good grief, you know we have been hard done by when even you are in our corner."
