Ben Stokes offered a brutally honest response when asked for his verdict on England’s woeful World Cup title defence, with Jos Buttler’s side winning just one game from six so far.

Having won the T20I World Cup last year, England came into the tournament as the double white-ball world champions, and were therefore considered among the favourites to go all the way again.

But an opening day defeat by New Zealand quickly dampened those hopes, and although a win over Bangladesh followed, subsequent losses to Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India put England all but out of the tournament.

As such, England’s Test captain – who was drawn back in after retiring from ODIs – spared no bones in his verdict on where it has gone wrong for his team.

‘I think the problem is that we’ve been c**p, to be honest with you,’ he said.

Ben Stokes offered hi brutally honest verdict of England’s failed ODI World Cup defence

England have won just one of their first six games, with defeats by New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India

Jos Buttler’s (left) side are the reigning ODI and T20I world champions and were among the favourites heading into the tournament

‘We’ve had a disastrous World Cup and there’s no point sugarcoating that because it’s the truth. We have been c**p. Everything we’ve tried throughout this World Cup, it’s just not worked.

‘We know that as individuals and as a team, I think that’s where it is as a team, we’ve been nowhere near good enough to be able to compete in a World Cup.’

With three games still to play, though, and a distinctly unlikely mathematical chance of progression there is something on the line for the reigning world champions before their defence formally ends and the crown is handed over.

As well as ‘pride’ Stokes indicated that a win over arch-nemesis Australia on Sunday could be some consolation for a bruising campaign, in what promises to be a huge match despite the relative lack of importance.

‘I think the biggest thing that we’ve got to play for is the pride of what it is to put the three lions on your chest,’ he added.

‘England and Australia in any sport, whenever the two nations come together and play against each other, it’s always a big occasion.’

Stokes is set to undergo knee surgery at the end of the tournament, having been unable to operate as a true all-rounder, not having bowled since England’s second Test defeat to Australia in the Ashes this summer.

He expects to be out for five to seven weeks, giving him plenty of time to get ready for the first Test against India at Hyderabad on January 25. The squad leave the UK on January 11 or 12 for a pre-tour camp in the UAE.

Stokes has been struggling with the problem on his left knee for much of the past 18 months
