Cristiano Ronaldo has responded to Lionel Messi winning his eighth Ballon d’Or by commenting laughing emojis beneath a video mocking his former rival.

The Argentinian playmaker’s record breaking win last night in Paris took him three ahead of Al-Nassr striker Ronaldo.

Spanish journalist Tomás Roncero posted a video where he said: ‘Hello friends. What we knew happened, they were going to give Messi another Ballon d’Or again.

‘He went to retire in Miami, even though he already looked like he was retired at PSG preparing for the World Cup. He won the World Cup, yes, good, but with six penalties… The World Cup was ten months ago, it’s November.

‘Messi has eight Ballon d’Ors, he should have had five. He has Iniesta/Xavi’s Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski’s who won six trophies in one season and Haaland’s who was the top scorer.’

Cristiano Ronaldo has had his say on Messi winning three more Ballon d’Or awards than him

Ronaldo put laughing emojis beneath the post reads: ‘Hello friends, we knew what was consumed. Messi was going to be given the Ballon d’Or again. Congratulations Leo.’

Commenting beneath the video on Instagram, Ronaldo put four laughing emojis – yet it is unsure what exactly the former Manchester United star means.

Piers Morgan, who recently interviewed Ronaldo in a bombshell interview, tweeted earlier today: ‘Messi preposterously winning the Ballon d’Or this year is yet more proof that the whole ‘Golden Ball’ system is rigged.

‘He should have won 2 fewer, @Cristiano should have won 2 more, and Haaland should have won this year. End.’

Haaland narrowly missed out on the top spot after scoring 52 goals in a treble-winning season.

Messi’s former PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe finished in third, while Kevin De Bruyne was in fourth.

The Argentinian legend narrowly pipped Norwegian striker Erling Haaland to the award

After winning the award this year, Messi was asked whether he was the best football player in history.

The 36-year-old humbly replied: ‘As I always said, I do not know if I am the best player in history or not. If I am one of the best, then this is a wonderful thing.’

Messi also praised the Argentinian staff and his players for helping him to win the award.

He wrote on his Instagram: ‘I only have words of gratitude for all the people around the world who supported me so much during my career and to whom I want to specially dedicate this award, along with my family who was always by my side.

‘This is a Ballon d’Or that I also want to share with my fellow, technical body, the employees… Because without the World Cup we achieved together it would have been impossible to win it. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks!’
