Gary Neville insists Tottenham should enjoy their fantastic start to the season, but believes they won’t be in title contention come the end of the season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side opened up their gap at the top of the table to five points following their 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Tottenham have taken 26 points out of a possible 30 this season, and talk has started over whether they could mount a shock title challenge.

Neville, who was a pundit for Sky Sports at Selhurst Park on Friday night, believes things will ‘settle down’ and doesn’t feel that Spurs will have the legs to be crowned champions come the end of the season.

He said: ‘They (Tottenham fans) should definitely enjoy it because it’s been a fantastic start to the season that none of us expected.

Gary Neville (right) says Tottenham fans should be happy with the start to their season but has warned them that things ‘will settle down’ and they won’t challenge for the title

‘We all thought that with Harry Kane leaving it was unconceivable that they would be in this position.

‘Those Tottenham fans have had a lot of pain over the last few years in terms of how the team have played, the results. Now, this is a lot more exciting for them.

‘They should keep their feet on the ground but enjoy tonight and recognise that there’s a long way to go.’

When asked about their title hopes, he said: ‘I don’t think they are [potential league winners or title challengers]. I honestly don’t think they are.

‘I think this is something that will settle down in the next few months but if some teams aren’t quite there and Tottenham are out of Europe, not in the Carabao Cup. They’ve got free weeks.

‘If they’re in contention in January then why wouldn’t they try and just boost the squad slightly and have a go at it because if (Man) City aren’t quite there or there’s some sort of slip up from Arsenal – those teams are obviously both in Europe.

‘Then why wouldn’t you just have a go? I don’t think so, I don’t think they’re a good enough squad to win the league but what they’re doing at this point in time is surpassing all expectations and they’re really enjoyable. Ange Postecoglou is doing a great job for them.’

Tottenham had to be patient in their clash with Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Neville has praised Ange Postecoglou’s (pictured) impact at Spurs and said that they should look to boost their squad in January if they are still in contention to win the title by that point

After a goalless first-half, it was Joel Ward’s 53rd minute own goal which put Spurs ahead, before Son Heung-min doubled their advantage 13 minutes later.

Crystal Palace got one back through Jordan Ayew in the second-half but it was too late to mount a comeback.

Neville praised Spurs for how they managed the game, as he said: ‘I thought that they were really patient. The best teams when they go one or two goals up they’re really patient.

‘They didn’t bow to the pressure of the crowd, Palace found it hard to close them down and I have to say that from a Spurs perspective, other than the last few minutes, they really controlled that second half and deserved to win.’
