Ange Postecoglou admitted on Friday night that Tottenham fans can dare to ‘dream’ after making it 10 Premier League games unbeaten to move five points clear at the top of the table.

It is the first time since 1960-61 – the season they did the First Division and FA Cup double – that Spurs have opened up such a lead in the top flight.

After surviving a late scare when Jordan Ayew struck in stoppage time for Crystal Palace, Postecoglou said of his supporters: ‘Let them dream. That’s what being a football supporter is all about. This lot have suffered a fair bit. I’m certainly not going to dampen that.

‘This is a tough place to come. It’s never going to be an open game of football here. I knew we’d have to be patient. I keep relating it to boxing to the guys. You’re not always going to get a knockout in the first minute or the first round. You’ve got to keep moving the opposition.’

Tottenham have taken 26 out of a possible 30 points in the Premier League under Postecoglou – the most by a manager from his first 10 games in the competition.

Ange Postecoglou has been hesitant to raise expectations but allowed fans to start ‘dreaming’ after their 2-1 win against Palace

‘The dreams last as long as they do, until somebody wakes you up,’ he added before rejecting the idea that his players might start to believe the hype surrounding them. ‘I don’t sense any of my squad are floating about the place. I don’t think you’d see me any different (whether top or not).

‘I enjoy every game. I want the players to enjoy the game. Not because we’re top of the table but because we’re living the dream, playing for a fantastic football club. The rest of it is about honouring that responsibility which has been bestowed upon us.’

Palace boss Roy Hodgson said: ‘We made life difficult for Tottenham. At the break we were satisfied. They are not top of the league for nothing. It was easy for them at 2-0 to take all the time in the world on the ball.’
