Erik ten Hag has revealed his five-word dressing room demand at half-time in Manchester United’s narrow 2-1 win against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. The Dutchman’s side were far from convincing again but found the flash of second-half quality to seal back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season.

United travelled to Yorkshire on a difficult day for everyone involved with the club following the sad passing of Old Trafford and England icon Sir Bobby Charlton.

But the Red Devils paid tribute to Sir Bobby, wearing black armbands in remembrance, by taking three crucial points back to Manchester.

Scott McTominay opened the scoring, continuing his scoring streak after his last-gasp Brentford heroics.

But the Scotsman’s handball in the penalty area saw Oli McBurnie equalise from the spot just six minutes later.

United increased the tempo after the break before Diogo Dalot produced a sensational long-range strike, and Sheffield United couldn’t respond.

Ten Hag’s side were much improved in the second half, and the Dutchman has revealed what he told his players in the dressing room after a lacklustre first period.

“At half time, I said find a way to win, and I think we were much better in the second half,” Ten Hag told BBC Sport.

“Scott McTominay is a very good fighter. He arrived there at the right moment, and it was a good goal.”

He added: “Every game is tough in the Premier League. Always after international breaks when players play different styles and systems with their nations, and then when you get back, you have to get back to your routine.

“You saw in the first half it was not our best game. It was far from fluid. We got a goal, but we have to be more composed and more mature to stay in the game at 1-0 up and now give up the goal so quickly.”
