Arsenal must outdo Chelsea if they are to sign RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo in a £52million deal. The Blues attempted to snap up the Spain international when he was plying his trade with Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb nearly four years ago but ultimately failed as he opted to move to Germany instead.

Olmo has become one of Leipzig’s most influential players since moving to the Red Bull Arena at the start of 2020 and has bagged 26 goals and 30 assists in 127 appearances for the side. He had previously starred for Zagreb and featured 124 times for the club after moving to Croatia from Barcelona in 2014.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Olmo is considering quitting Leipzig at the end of the season, despite penning fresh terms in the summer. Arsenal are keen to land the attacker, as are Manchester City Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. And Chelsea are also interested in returning to the fray after previously missing out on the ace.

Ahead of his move to Germany, Chelsea were said to have put forward a firm offer for Olmo as they attempted to entice him to the Premier League. But former Dinamo Zagreb sporting director Zoran Mamic later revealed that the talented ace never had any intentions of moving to England.

We could have told Dani that we did not agree to go to Leipzig, that we had not agreed, but that would not be fair to him.

“We didn’t do the problem, although there were bigger deals. Although this is by far the biggest deal, the bonuses are realistic, plus 20 per cent of future transfers. Dani did not want to go to Italy and England, he insisted on Leipzig, if we had had a day or two, he would probably be in Bayern [Munich]. But Dani said he wanted to [join] Leipzig – he was very keen on the option and [we] should respect it.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. And Arsenal may feel that figure would provide them with excellent value for money as they look to battle for silverware on all fronts this season.

But Gunners transfer chief Edu and manager Mikel Arteta will first have to convince the player that the Premier League is the place to be. And they may need to use the very best negotiation tactics at their disposal to keep him away from the Bernabeu Stadium and the Nou Camp if Real and Barcelona do indeed come calling.
