Brentford Football Club has taken an online dig at Wrexham after the latest episode of the Welsh club’s popular documentary series suggested that the Bees were based in the North East of England.

The Red Dragons are back in the Football League this season for the first time in 15 years after they won the National League last season with a record 114 points.

Their return to the big time was underpinned by the ownership of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who bought the club in 2020 before ploughing millions of pounds into the project, reversing their fortunes.

The club’s success has been charted by the hugely successful Disney+ documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ which has helped to raise the profile of the former non-league outfit to unprecedented levels.

The second series of the show is currently being aired in the UK but the use of a map that supposedly illustrates where a number of football clubs are based around the British Isles has given geography teachers a high temperature.

West London outfit Brentford might not be the biggest club from the capital competing in the Premier League, but according to the Welcome to Wrexham map they are based in the North East of England, close to the border with Scotland, some 300 miles away from the Gtech Community Stadium where they play their home games.

Brentford’s social media team pounced on the gaffe and took to social media to share their thoughts. Posting a screen grab of the wildly inaccurate map on X (formerly Twitter), Brentford wrote: “We’re just a bus stop in Hexham. We have questions @WrexhamFX,” followed by a crying with laughter emoji.

The post quickly attracted thousands of likes as the true farce of the Wrexham map became apparent.

Brentford weren’t the only team to be relocated around Great Britain by This is Wrexham. Merseyside club Everton found themselves in North Wales seemingly on route to Anglesey, while both Cardiff City and Swansea City must have received international clearance to have been located in England on the other side of the River Severn.

More info

North East club Newcastle United found themselves landlocked on the wrong side of West Yorkshire club Leeds United while Lancashire outfit Blackburn Rovers had become the most northern team in Cumbria, right on the Scottish border.

Queens Park Rangers were another club to be booted out of West London, with The Hoops relocated to the Cotswolds.

While it is true that Wrexham have been out of the EFL for a decade and a half, the Red Dragons could run into trouble getting to away games this season if they continue to follow the documentary’s map when it comes to finding their opponents around the country.
