Wayne Rooney could be set for an awkward meeting with Tom Brady as he begins his stint as Birmingham manager.

Rooney was appointed by the Blues earlier this week after he left DC United in the MLS and former manager John Eustace was sacked by the club.

He was swiftly brought in as the club pledged to play with a more ‘fearless’ approach as they target a surprise promotion push in the Championship this season.

Brady, meanwhile, is one of the best players in NFL history and arguably the most famous, and is the new co-owner of Birmingham having taken over the club in August.

But some of Rooney’s older posts on X have come to light in recent days, criticising American football during his playing days.

Rooney posted some infamous tweets on X, formerly Twitter, years ago, including a tribute to Whitney Houston after her death and publicly asking Rio Ferdinand if he wanted a lift to training.

But eagle-eyes users have dug up some anti-NFL tweets, which slammed the sport his new boss, Brady, is famous for.

In 2012, the former England captain posted: ‘Trying to watch the Super Bowl Final, how do they call this football. Like watching paint dry. Looking forward to the adverts and music.’

He added: ‘Seen more guys in studio than the players at the Super Bowl. Zzzzzzz hurry up music.’

A third read: ‘Rugby league is far better than super bowl. Leed rhinos to win again. I know its mad but im a rhinos fan.’

Rooney was infamous for some of his tweets as a player, with the criticisms of the NFL coming over a decade ago

Brady is a seven-time Super Bowl champion and is said to be heavily involved in the day-to-day running of Birmingham.

In his reveal press conference, Rooney revealed he had spoken to Brady, saying: ‘I have spoken to Tom, he is very ambitious to move this club forward.

‘It’s great to have him here, it’s important for the players to see Tom Brady have an involvement. It’s very clear that Tom is fully involved in the club.’

Rooney’s game in charge of the club will be against former Manchester United team-mate Michael Carrick and his Middlesborough side after the international break.
