Arsenal will be hoping they can protect their star defender William Saliba for the rest of the season after he put in another indomitable display on Sunday. The Gunners made clear their intentions to chase after the Premier League title again this season following their 1-0 success over Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, and Mikel Arteta’s men will need Saliba’s commanding presence at the back if they are to repeat their challenge this year.

Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench to score the winner on 86 minutes to hand the north London side a crucial three points and lay down a firm title statement. But those who watched the game came away hugely impressed with the hosts’ rearguard action, in particular the resilient display from Saliba.

The 22-year-old posted some hugely impressive defensive statistics, despite being tasked with nullifying the towering Norwegian striker Erling Haaland. Not only did he manage to avoid being dribbled past, he was victorious in all of his duels and managed to go the entire game without committing a single foul.

It later emerged after the game that Saliba was carrying an injury after he decided to play through the pain barrier. Telefoot reporter Saber Desfarges reported that the Arsenal man agreed to have injections before the game to numb the feeling in his toe, which allowed him to take part.

In an official press release, France announced Saliba would remain with his club over the international break in order to treat his toe injury.

While much is made about Arsenal’s array of attacking talents, Saliba may prove to be just as vital – if not more. After all, it is widely accepted that their dismal run of form coincided with the time he picked up an injury that ruled him out of the final stretch of the 2022-23 season, where Arsenal’s title challenge crumbled and City clinched their fifth crown in six seasons.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. No player has successfully managed to dribble past the former Saint Etienne man so far this season, something Van Dijk prided himself on, which would suggest Arsenal may well already have a world-class defender of their own in the making.

He has already made over 150 appearances in his career and despite his youthful presence in the squad, Saliba already has the look of a senior player at the back, and it is difficult to understand why it took the club three years before deciding he was ready to start games.

But they will be glad they resisted offers to sell after loan spells with Marseille and Nice, and while their £27million investment back in 2019 seemed expensive at the time, few would deny it looks like a bargain.

If he can produce near-flawless performances of this kind while injured, Arteta and Arsenal will be eager to see just how good he can be when he returns to full fitness.

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe. A truly modern-looking shirt with a homage to the past, the Nike kit also includes a nod to the club’s iconic Invincible’s side in the finer details while catching the eye with the lightning bolt motif
