{"id":293708,"date":"2023-10-09T10:05:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T10:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/?p=293708"},"modified":"2023-10-09T10:05:57","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T10:05:57","slug":"carragher-admits-it-will-be-tough-for-liverpool-to-compete-for-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/soccer\/carragher-admits-it-will-be-tough-for-liverpool-to-compete-for-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Carragher admits it will be &apos;tough&apos; for Liverpool to compete for title"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Jamie Carragher admits it will be &#8216;tough&#8217; for Liverpool to compete for the Premier League title &#8211; as former defender highlights TWO areas where the Reds still need to strengthen<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jamie Carragher has downplayed suggestions that Liverpool can win the league\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jurgen Klopp&#8217;s side were held to a 2-2 draw with Brighton on Sunday afternoon\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport&#8217;s podcast &#8216;It&#8217;s All Kicking Off!&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jamie Carragher has suggested that Liverpool will not be able to compete for the Premier League title due to two areas where they still need to strengthen.<\/p>\n<p>The Reds were held to a 2-2 draw with Brighton on Sunday afternoon, after a first-half Mohamed Salah brace rescued a point for Jurgen Klopp&#8217;s side at the Amex.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The result saw Liverpool rise up to third in the top-flight table and, had it not been for some VAR controversy at Tottenham, they could be even higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, despite their strong start to the Premier League season, former Reds defender Carragher has suggested the side are still short in a couple areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the clash at the Amex, Carragher said:\u00a0&#8216;Whether they can go on and win the biggest trophy which is the\u00a0Premier League\u00a0&#8211; I think that will be tough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/07\/76324451-12609459-image-a-1_1696831820782.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jamie Carragher has highlighted two areas where he thinks Liverpool still need to strengthen<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/07\/76324593-12609459-image-a-2_1696831907682.jpg\" height=\"420\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Reds currently sit third in the Premier League table after their 2-2 draw with Brighton<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think that could be something\u00a0Liverpool could go for next season with a couple more additions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think Liverpool lack a top central midfield player and maybe another defender. Those gaps will be plugged whether that is in January or in the summer &#8211; I think they will be better equipped next season to go for the Premier League.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool&#8217;s search for midfield reinforcements was well documented this summer, after they were pipped to the signings of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia &#8211; who both opted to join rivals Chelsea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Reds managed to bring in Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich and Wataro Endo from Stuttgart in a bid to bolster their midfield depth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It came after a number of departures from the club this summer, such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite boasting a new-look squad for the campaign, Liverpool have still managed to record 17 points from a possible 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on their start, Carragher also said:\u00a0&#8216;It&#8217;s been a promising start this season. And it looks like certainly in the first few weeks that this team he is building can hopefully go on to achieve what his previous teams have done.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/07\/76324513-12609459-image-a-3_1696831961441.jpg\" height=\"470\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Alexis Mac Allister (R) was one of the midfield stars that Liverpool signed during the summer<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/09\/07\/76324511-12609459-image-a-4_1696831963414.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Gravenberch (R) was also brought in from Bayern Munich to bolster Liverpool&#8217;s depth\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the controversy at Tottenham which saw Liverpool&#8217;s Luis Diaz have a goal wrongfully ruled out for offside, Jurgen Klopp<span>\u00a0refused to be drawn into another VAR discussion\u00a0 after\u00a0<\/span>Brighton<span>\u00a0midfielder Pascal Gross escaped a red card in the 2-2 draw on Sunday.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sky Sports pundit\u00a0Micah Richards said the Brighton midfielder should have been sent off for his foul on Dominik Szoboszlai.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gross gave away a penalty in the for pulling back the Hungarian inside the box area when he was the last man. But he was not shown a red card following a VAR review.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards Klopp said: &#8216;I don&#8217;t know. I don&#8217;t know, I think it the foul is inside the box for a penalty it&#8217;s a yellow card but if it&#8217;s outside it could be red.\u00a0I don&#8217;t know, don&#8217;t talk to me about rules.
